To mark World Environment Day, Whoopi Goldberg has joined Extinction Rebellion‘s cause by lending her iconic voice to an emotive animation with a poignant message about climate action.
Created by the minds behind Greenpeace's lovable Rang-tan, Passion Pictures, The Gigantic Change warns against remaining sedentary about climate action, as society returns from lockdown hibernation.
Set in the future, Goldberg acts as a grandmother in the year 2050. Responding to the request from her grandchild for a bedtime story, Goldberg's character picks up ‘The Big Change, a story about our treatment of the earth today.
As she reads the story, Goldberg's voice brings gravitas to XR‘s message, as she relays the disastrous ways humans were harming the earth in 2020.
Asking the child to finish the story, the narrative switches to a message of hope – that all might not be lost if people take action.
Extinction Rebellion has been fairly active in recent weeks, ensuring that its cause doesn't lay forgotten with the world‘s focus on the ongoing pandemic and the George Floyd protests in the US.
Last month it revealed ‘#NoGoingBack‘, the first in a series of short films created to remind the general public to keep the environment top of mind when normal service resumes.
As part of the campaign, Extinction Rebellion Global Support revealed a Covid-19 crowdfund, with proceeds allowing the campaigning organisation to provide emergency grant funding to Extinction Rebellion groups around the world as they carry out either immediate relief work or regroup amid the new normal.
